Fluxes Description

Yearly/Monthly Mean Flux : By convention, positive sign for sources of CO2 to the atmosphere and negative sign for sinks of CO2 from the atmosphere. These fluxes can be directly compared with the results of large-scale independent bottom-up models, inventories of accounting systems.

Monthly Filtered Fluxes : Monthly fluxes are deseasonalized and then filtered (in the frequency domain) to remove intra-annual variabilty over the selected period. 3 months filter to remove only the short term variations (less than 3 months) and 1 year filter to remove all intra-annual variations (see details). Filtered fluxes are especially useful to understand how 'abnormal' was the CO2 balance of a given region during a specific period as compared to its long-term mean value. For instance, the big 1997-1998 El Niño and the drought years at northern mid latitudes in 2002, 2003 and 2005 have caused large anomalies in CO2 fluxes.

Mean Seasonal Cycle: Monthly mean flux averaged over the selected period.

Total Flux : Defined here as the sum of ocean fluxes, land ecosystem exchange and fossil fuel emissions. The Total flux is a direct result of inversions.

Natural fluxes : Difference between the total flux and the fossil fuel emissions.
